Meet our experts
Dr. Jane Madell
PhD CCC A/SLP, LSLS, Cert AVT
Dr. Jane Madell has been a pediatric audiologist for about 50 years. She currently has a private practice providing consultation with families, school districts, and speech and hearing programs with the goal of maximizing auditory skills for children with hearing loss and other auditory disorders.
Dr. Madell was formerly Director of the Hearing and Learning Center and Co-Director of the Cochlear Implant Center at The Ear Institute, New York Eye and Ear infirmary and Beth Israel Medical Center. She is a certified audiologist, speech-language pathologist, LSLS auditory verbal therapist.
Dr. Madell’s clinical and research interests have been in the area of evaluation of hearing in infants and young children, management of hearing loss in children with severe and profound hearing loss, selection and management of amplification including hearing aids, cochlear implants, and FM systems, assessment of auditory function, family support, and evaluation and management of auditory processing disorders.
Dr. Madell has published 7 books, and numerous book chapters and journal articles. She writes the Hearing and Kids page for the blog www.hearinghealthmatters.org. She is the recipient of the Marion Downs Award for Excellence in Pediatric Audiology. She presents nationally and internationally on topics related to hearing loss and other auditory disorders in infants and children.
Joan Hewitt, Au.D., FAAA is a pediatric audiologist specializing in diagnosing and treating infants and children with hearing loss. Holding advanced degrees in both audiology and auditory-oral education of the deaf, Dr. Hewitt has provided auditory-verbal services, diagnostic testing, hearing aid fitting, cochlear implant programming, and educational support to infants, children, families, and school districts for more than 30 years.
She currently serves as a pediatric audiologist and the director of Project TALK, a non-profit program for children with hearing loss which has become nationally and internationally known for ensuring children receive maximal benefit from their hearing technology. Dr. Hewitt also serves as faculty in the Speech Pathology Department at California State University – San Marcos and teaches audiology and aural habilitation at the graduate and undergraduate levels. She is a frequent presenter at professional conferences and has written chapters in pediatric audiology textbooks on appropriately diagnosing hearing loss, maximizing benefit with hearing technology, and providing audiological care in complex pediatric cases.
